Somuna Festival

About Somuna Festival

The Somuna Festival is for all who...

• Want to experience the magic of life together.
• Really love nature and act accordingly.
• Act with respect to themselves and others.

I am standing on the top of the hill und look over the festival area.. on the dancefloor there´s moving a melting crowd of dancing bodies. Some of the dancers have closed their eyes, deeply lost in their dance, many a smile on their lips. Others spin over the dancefloor, cheering, and passing their joy to those who are lying in the grass, dreaming or chatting, flowed through by music and sunshine.

I move my head and glance at the "Creative Area" where artworks emerge on sheets, paper and bodies..beautiful patterns and forms, expressions of dozens of souls as far as the eye can reach.... some of the artworks pass me by, their laughter is music to my ears. The music.. I smile to myself thinking of the passed hours, filled with mystical, soulful sounds. How easy it is to get lost in them when the djs and musicians are real artist who know how to play carfully with the sounds, to respond to the people on the dancefloor.

Who take themaselves back by creating a space in which emotions can be lived through and transformed by the dance.... the sound of drums take me back into the present and my feet carry me to the "Jam Area". There they sit in a cyrcle, play their drums, shake their rassles and elicit rough tones out of their didgeridoos, accompanied by cheerfull guitar tunes. Some start to sing now and a spontaneous concert, an ode to life, raises into the sky...elation, lust for life...my view rambles back over the festival area.. the people take care to the spot, there´s hardly any rubbish lying around. All of them understood what a privilege it is to experience something like this together, to dance in peace and harmony, to laugh, to celebrate our being together. What a feeling....

Somuna arised out of such a common vision. It is our concern to check our actions for authenticity again and again and to keep the vision in mind.

Vortex Festival

About Vortex Festival

A history of the development of psychedelic culture in Cape Town by Traveller Joe

Goa or psychedelic trance is a form of electronic music that developed on the beaches of Goa, India in the early 1990s. With the worldwide explosion of this form of dance music beyond the borders of India, the first reported outdoor Trance party in South Africa was a small gathering of traveling friends with a ghetto blaster celebrating a birthday on Sandy Bay beach. The year was 1994 & trance had arrived in Cape Town, South Africa.

In that same year a young French trance DJ, Dhya visited Cape Town after a life changing Goa experience. On 26 November 1994 he was went to the first Vortex ever produced, an indoor warehouse party called The Essence of Fluorescence & introduced to the organizers by mutual friends. A chance meeting that was to have far reaching implications with regards the direction of dance culture in Africa. At this time dance music was in its infancy in South Africa with Vortex & Pharcyde producing house orientated monthly warehouse raves.

In February 1995 electronic music enthusiasts were treated to the first outdoor party ever held in Cape Town. Stardust, produced by a German DJ, Fresco-X, was held on the green patch at Scarborough. Suddenly the great outdoors seemed like the place to hold parties. Firmly bitten by the Goa bug & inspired by the blossoming dance sub-culture down here Dhya returned to Cape Town in February that year with a fellow Israeli trance DJ, Yulchi. Armed with DATs & hours of psychedelic music they approached Vortex with regards DJing at one of the parties. Even though Vortex was doing big warehouse raves, when they heard the music it was an easy step to agree to let the music be heard.

The first psychedelic trance to be played to an audience happened soon after, at Vortex’s Mayday party at Culemborg in May 1995 to a crowd of about 4000. Needless to say the jump from house to trance in an indoor environment was a huge shock for many people attending & therefore Vortex continued to produce indoor raves through 1995 winter. In September 1995 the Vortex crew, for the purpose of promoting outdoor parties & trance music, formed a splinter organization, called Progression. Three successful Vortex outdoor Progression events were held in the months September to December 1995.

Dhya formed his own party organization, Moonchild Express & began throwing trance parties. In November 1995 the first true outdoor psychedelic party was produced by Conscious Dreams, a collective of foreign travelers in collaboration with Moonchild Express, at East Fort on Chapman’s Peak. They continued to throw parties on a monthly basis usually on or around full moon.

March 1996 saw St. Pierre from France booked by Vortex to play at their Let There be Light party. He was the first international psychedelic artist ever brought to Africa. In March 1996 Moonchild Express & Conscious Dreams brought out Goa Gil & August 1996 saw Tsuyoshi Suzuki play at Vortex’s The Art Of Sound party. Towards the end of 1996 the Conscious Dreams/Moonchild Express collective ended & out of this Alien Safari was born, producing their first event in December 1996.

The millennium saw Vortex produce a hugely internationally acclaimed party on New Years Eve. In collaboration with Etnica this party was promoted worldwide & saw over 2000 international travelers attend from all over the world. This was a worldwide groundbreaking event, featuring all the formulative bands of the trance scene. Hallucinogen, X-Dream, Total Eclipse, Pleaidians, Kox-Box, Cydonia, Tristan, Tim Schuldt, Infected Mushroom, Droidlock, California Sunshine, Bamboo Forest & was at the time the biggest trance party ever held out of Europe. This put South Africa firmly on the map as an international trance destination.

The year 2002 saw a total eclipse on South African soil. Vortex in collaboration with Alien Safari & Etnica produced the legendary South Africa 2002 eclipse party in tribal lands on the border of the Kruger National Park. The rest as they say is history. With multiple organizations promoting outdoor psy-trance parties on a regular basis, psychedelic culture in Africa was on the go. At present there are outdoor parties almost every weekend through the summer months & trance is firmly established in Cape Town as one of the leading forms of popular youth culture.

Intention

Vortex Trance Adventures

Psychedelic trance is a way of life, a way of living that teaches us the beauty of the world and our relationship to it. Trance parties for us are about the connection of the conscious whole through the expression of dance & only the true intentions of the organizers & musicians allow this to take place.

Now producing just two outdoor parties a summer on the first Saturday of December and Easter Weekend the Vortex trance collective, are on a mission to bring you pure & real psychedelic experiences produced with the utmost care, with an attention to detail that you have come to know and expect over the years.

We believe that the commercialization of the scene worldwide has diminished the message of what trance teaches and are on a mission to bring back the true psychedelic experience. You can recognize our parties by looking for our logo, which means “Open your mind & give rise to light”, on all our marketing.

At our parties expect trance and only trance, in a renewed spirit of light & love. Trust in trance & keep it real. Be a part of the change you wish to see in the world.

Peace

Is the core of energy found within ourselves when we let go of all or fears. We have a loss of interest in judging ourselves and those around us. We tend to think and act spontaneously, enjoying each moment as we appreciate everything and smile through the eyes, from the heart.

Love

We all long for love, understanding and acceptance. We can only truly give and receive love once we have gained acceptance and peace within ourselves. Our actions of love towards others all stem from the love we have for ourselves.

Unity

Is what happens when a group of people, who have peace, experience their love for themselves and each other, creating a oneness within the group.

Respect

The attitude you reach because of Peace, Love and Unity. This allows an environment of freedom of choice. You allow yourself the freedom to be yourself as you allow others the freedom and space to be themselves.

Manifesto

The world is music & creation is a dance

Our emotional state of choice is ecstasy
Our nourishment of choice is love
Our addiction of choice is technology
Our religion of choice is music
Our currency of choice is knowledge
Our politics of choice is none
Our society of choice is utopian, though we know it will never be

You may hate us, you may dismiss us, you may misunderstand us, you may be unaware of our existence, we are not criminals, we are not disillusioned, we are not drug addicts, we are not naive children, we are one massive global, tribal village, that transcends man-made laws, physical geography, and time itself. No matter how you marginalize and label us you will never ever stop us.

We were first drawn together by the sound from far away, the thunderous muffled, and echoing beat was comparable to a mother’s heart soothing a child in her womb. We were drawn back into this womb, and there together, in the heat, passion and darkness we came to accept that we are all equal, not only to the darkness, and to ourselves, but to the very music slamming into us and passing through our souls, we are all equal, we are one.

We could feel the hand of divinity at our backs, pushing us forward, pushing us to push ourselves, pushing us to turn to the person beside us to join hands and uplift them by sharing the uncontrollable joy we feel from creating a magical bubble that can, for one evening protect us from the horrors, atrocities and pollution of the outside world. It is in that very instant, with these initial realizations that each of us was truly born.

We seek to relinquish our inhibitions, free ourselves from the shackles and restraints you have placed on us for your own peace of mind. We seek to re-write the programming that you have tried to indoctrinate us with from the moment we were born. Programming that tells us to hate, that tells us to judge, that tells us to stuff ourselves into the nearest and most convenient pigeon hole. Programming that tells us to eat from the poisoned shiny silver spoon you are trying to feed us with, instead of nourishing ourselves with our own capable hands. Programming that tells us to close our minds instead of open them.

Until the sun rises to burn your eyes by revealing the distopian reality of the twisted world you have created for us, we dance fiercely with our brothers and sisters in celebration of our life, of our culture and of the values we believe in. These are:

Peace
Love
Freedom
Tolerance
Unity
Harmony
Statement
Universal Responsibility
Respect

Our enemy of choice is ignorance, our weapon of choice is information, our crime of choice is breaking and challenging whatever laws you feel you need to put in place to stop us from celebrating our existence and our need to shed ourselves of the burden of uncertainty of a future you have been unable to stabilize and secure for us. But know that while you may shut down any given party on any given night in any given city, in any given country on this beautiful planet, you can never shut down the entire party; you do not have access to that switch, no matter what you may think.

“Dance like no one is watching, sing like no one is listening, love like you’ve never been hurt, live like it’s Heaven on Earth.”

The music will never stop
The heartbeat will never fade
The party will never end
I am a Raver and this is my manifesto

Sonica Festival

About Sonica Festival

Welcome at SONICA new gateway!
Sonica Festival offer a new multi-ethnic experience of love, sound and dreams, in touch with nature and world-wide cultures. It's our aim to keep improving our activities for living together and having fun in a sustainable way, respecting Mother Earth and enhancing our common social vision.

Sonica.. arises from the will to create a context of unity which is based on the values of knowledge, interdependence and sharing; it has the aim to promote awareness towards a more responsible vision of the environment in which we live.

Sonica intends to promote a more enhanced and updated human and social consciousness, the same way powerful software would do: by using new self-preservation drivers for the protection of the ecosystems where human beings live and interact.

Sonica looks at contemporary society in a functional way, the same way an operating system would do: able to consistently manage all the emergencies of its surrounding world.

Sonica is an international festival dedicated to environmental sustainability and based on contemporary art, music and culture as the main expressions of socio-cultural interaction in the era of progress and technology.

Sonica symbolizes the retrieval of cosmic consciousness, a spiritual upgrade dedicated to revalue the 4 natural elements and their combination: a process that starts from the Spirit, who manifests itself by originating everything that exists.

The process of creation originates from the Divine and goes down to the Water element, primary source and sustenance of life on Earth. The very first elemental forms of life originated from Water, they evolved during the course of millennia detaching from their primordial element. The creative process evolves upwards from Water to Air; Air represents forms of life that are self sufficient enough to get organized and aware of their own self. These beings evolve from their primary innocence towards a moral and technological organization, proceeding further to the Earth element. Earth represents the highest grade of evolution that an era can support; when all this becomes too heavy to sustain, relapses take place in different areas but most of all in the spiritual one. Human beings move away from the Spirit, they degrade downwards, to the Fire, highest symbol of degeneration.

Recovery usually follows depression, a return to the source, in this case to the Spirit. A process that is comparable to the reincarnation cycles: through them the Soul gains access to a new existence.

Our contemporary society, technologically advanced, is responsible more than ever before of hydrologic, atmospheric and geologic disruptions: from global warming to the impoverishment of energy sources, to pollution.

In order to survive it's society's responsibility to provide a remedy to these disruptions, at any cost.

Sonica's mission is to become an input for a more evolved relationship with the Elements of life.

This can be done by improving the use of resources without causing damage: on the contrary, making an effort to improve; exploiting the power of the sun, its light, its fire, to satisfy the energy demand without having to resort to polluting power and nuclear stations; using air and wind to produce enough renewable and replaceable energy; preserving Earth from the progressive depletion of its resources, from mining and deforestation; protecting the waters in order to protect the natural cycles of life. A life strictly correlated to the Universal Intelligence and to the Cosmic Equilibrium.

This is the time to reload our future.

Sonica thanks so much all the festival-goers who attended its last edition making it so special and magic, and invites you to join its network to receive all upcoming infos about future programs, partnerships and collaborations with other festivals and organizations around the globe. Write us for any info to: info@sonica-dance-festival.eu Join Sonica people! Sign-up to the mailing list to be informed and updated :-)

O.Z.O.R.A Festival

About O.Z.O.R.A Festival

Ozora has always been a special place in history. The valley itself used to be a so called ‘sea-eye’ when the Pannon sea existed, and the soil, flora and fauna on some places are Nature Reserve protected.

Ozora is a village in Tolna County, Hungary. It has been a notable historic site since the Middle Ages. Pipo of Ozora built his castle here in the 15th century by permission of Sigismund of Hungary in 1416. An important victory of Arthur Görgei at the Battle of Ozora of the 1848 Revolution was gained here.

It is the site of a psychedelic trance festival called O.Z.O.R.A., which has been held every year since 2004.

It is also known for hosting the Solipse Festival in 1999.

The village itself is famous of its ‘black willows’, it was a ‘witch town’ where all women had been poisoning the men to control the society in secret. Also there are many tales and stories about the castle and its owner Pipo. More interestingly there was a small village (Dadpuszta) on the area of the Festival, with many families and even one small school.

The first Festival took place in 1999 when there was a total Sun eclipse in the area: the famous Solipse. Almost 30 thousand people gathered from all over the world creating a new ritual.

The most important advice from us is to have fun. Second is to look out for each other. We are a big family so treat everyone with respect and help the ones in need.

Hadra Trance Festival

About Hadra Trance Festival

Four days, three nights of psychedelic music and atmosphere: the 5th Hadra Trance Festival is officially taking place again this summer in the Natural Park of Lans-en-Vercors. The year marks an eventful anniversary: the Hadra team has been working to promote electronic music and trance culture for 10 years now. And the best way to share these values and celebrate this decade of activism in style is, of course, a new edition of the Hadra Trance Festival !

It provides a great opportunity to discover well-known foreign artists who seldom perform in France, but also local breakthrough artists. They will rock your days and nights from the main stage, centred on psychedelic trance, to the alternative stage which features more instrumental and relaxing sounds, such as dub, ambient or world music. Alongside, in the brightly decorated "village" of the festival, you will be able to applaud the street performers, relax in the healing area, discover the arts and crafts or world cuisine stalls, enjoy the many products of the Vercors plateau's craftsmen and a refreshment stall held by local cultural organizations and charities. -

Rainbow Serpent Festival

About Rainbow Serpent Festival

The Rainbow Serpent Festival has come a long over the years. From a small gathering in a secluded clearing, to an internationally recongnised, multifaceted weekend of dance, colour, expression and celebration. People now travel from all over the world to Western Victoria to experience what some have said is the best outdoor festival of it’s type in the Southern Hemisphere.

For many of the 10,000 plus people that attend each year, Rainbow has become an institution, and annual reunion, a marker in the year that’s looked forward to for months in advance. For others it’s a fresh discovery of opportunity and escapism, a chance to connect with like minded individuals and to celebrate nature, community and harmony. Perhaps the continued success of Rainbow can be accredited to the broad experiences and opportunities on offer.

No longer just an electronic music festival these days you can expect to experience a unique combination of music, art, performance, spiritual education, relaxation and healing. "While dancing their Dreamings, aborigines spiritually connect themselves to the land and to the Dreamtime. The drumming of feet during the dance draws the earth into dialogue with the dancers, allowing the ceremony to bring the power of the Dreaming to life." The name Rainbow Serpent is distinctly Australian, coming from the Dreamtime creation story told by the traditional owners of the land. Dreamtime stories often vary between aboriginal tribes, however the story of the Rainbow Serpent is special as it is one of the few common to all. The Rainbow Serpent is protector of the land, and the source of all life.

Music has always been a highlight of Rainbow. From the early trance days to the broader musical style of today, one thing Rainbow has never compromised on is the quality of it's acts. With world class décor, roving artistic performances, crazy activities you cant imagine a more exotic sensory mix spread over four days. Put simply if you’ve never been to the Rainbow Serpent Festival, now is the time to buy a tent and call your friends.

Next festival is on 27-20 of January 2012, Beaufort, Victoria, Australia.

Full Moon Festival

About FullMoon Festival

The Moon is full again, so the time has come to give you some news about the Fullmoon Festival!
Additionally we will provide you in the following months some worth knowing facts, myths, cults and rituals around our eponymous, the moon.

At first some actual development:

Chriss and Ralf are in India, meeting all the freaks & family, spreading the 2nd run of Fullmoon Festival flayer and pushing the booking further. They will return next week with a bag full of new arrangements, but it will stay suspenseful, until the line up it’s not completed.

We are absolutely glad to have received all permissions from the German authorities that are needed for a successful setting of the FullMoon! These permission, which last year were not given in the right time frame, were the reason, why the festival couldn’t take place in 2009. You can imagine that our activities were down for a day because of us whirling and dancing though the office and being exited about this funny piece of paper.

Requests of shops and art spaces from all over the world are already coming in. In April we will start contacting everybody, as we would like to have a harmonious concept with selected, beautifully decorated shops and an international width of participants. We are looking forward to creating a colorful and illuminated space with all activists, which complements our set up wonderfully and invites you to linger about, meet and pause.

And now some facts and myths around the full moon..

Facts:

Did you know, that the moon orbit is not a circle but in an ellipse? Short before the moon is full today, the moon will reach the shortest distance to earth, which is around 356.000 km. The maximum distance is 406.740 km. So it might seem bigger than on other days.

There is one more phenomenon that makes the moon seem bigger, but is not related to the real distance or elliptic orbit. It’s called the moon illusion and can be seen on the horizon while the moon is rising. Later in the same night it seems to be further back again. But all this is just an illusion, which is still being examined. One theory is, that it seems bigger due to the depth information, that is between the visitor and the moon

Myths:

The full moon stands in many cultures for accomplished growth, maturity and implementation. Whatever forces were slumbering within people, are now breaking out. This are not only good feelings. Everything suppressed or not lived can be freed in this time. Our deepest emotions may come on the surface. That’s why there is a lot of aggressive but also high sexual potential around these days.

This time has also a big quality for rituals, that are connected with inner visualizations and deep feelings like telling fortune and to put one's cards on the table. Talented people often have visions or clairvoyant dreams around the full moon.

In different cultures there always existed myths and tips, what one should know and do: They say:

...that people are looking for conflicts but also may be extremely joyous..

…that men should salute and women should curtsy three times to the moon in order to keep away disasters and accidents until the next full moon…

…that who doesn’t toast at least once to the full moon is not worth having luck (greek toast)…

…that who drinks at full moon does it excessively…

…that the full moon has influence on our sleep (due to a survey 39% of the people believe it)…

…that clear water, being illuminated by the full moon in a glass over night, gives you enormous beauty while washing your face with it ne next morning (from Croatia)..

…that curative herbs, cut shortly before the full moon, reveal their power in the edges..

…that virgins (!) can enlarge their breasts through the full moon shining on them at midnight..

…that you can clean and upload your stones and crystals energetically in the full moon..

…that you shouldn’t take important decisions while the moon is full…

…that it is recommended to lay your wallet opened in the moonlight to collect the full energy in order to attract money..

…that the body absorbs everything better at full moon, i.e. vitamins, creams but also toxic…

Enough for now, the next full moon will be accomplished with an astrological view on the moon activities.

So, take care everybody, we’ll be back at the next full moon!

ShivaMoon Festival

About ShivaMoon Festival

It is now well over ten years since the first psytrance parties began in Germany in the early 1990s, originally inspired by travelers returning from Goa. The psychedelic trance open air festival scene in north Germany is now firmly established with a series of annual parties each summer weekend.

Northern Germany has a choice of psychedelic trance happenings throughout the summer months. From June through September there are sometimes as many as six open air parties every weekend across Germany. At the summer's peak in July and August there is at least one major event every weekend - the larger, and by now traditional open air festivals, attracting between 10 and 20 thousand trancers, each lasting 3 days or more.

The larger German "must go" events in July/August are Fusion, Full Moon, Voov Experience, Shiva Moon and Antaris Project. There are also many medium-sized events for between 2,000 and 5,000 people at a variety of beauty spots in the German countryside and coastline, going under such names as: Psychedelic Circus, Tshitraka, Nation of Gondwana and Indian Spirit, as well as a string of smaller outdoor parties for several hundred people, some of which are free.

Whereas the Voov Experience keeps their lineup a close secret, Shiva Moon publicizes an impressive list of top international DJs (including Raja Ram and Tsuyoshi Suzuki in 2009) and live performances, offers two dance areas including a massive main area with a suitably massive sound system - all surrounded by gigantic UV decoration of glowing three dimensional objects - the product of a fantastic imagination on a grand scale: such as dinosaur-sized insects, aliens strolling through fields of mushrooms, a terradactyl and a mayan pyramid. The intention of Shiva Moon's unique decoration, world-class laser show and outstanding international lineup is to transport you to another world, one where your spirit can fly free.

Shiva Moon is the inspiration of Jan Engel. Jan began by decorating the first Voov Experience parties but quickly realized his dream and has been creating his own Shiva Moon Festival since 1995. Admittedly he is no longer a young man but demonstrates more than enough drive and energy to conduct this mega event successfully every year. The hallmark of the party is always a commanding pyramid sound-stage flanked by a massive upturned crescent moon, the symbol of the Hindu God Shiva, as illustrated on the flyer. Jan also promises new decoration and UV theater performances for 2005.

Glade Festival

About Glade Festival

The UK’s most forward-thinking electronic music event Glade Festival returns for 2011, revolutionised and stripped back to it’s shiny roots. Taking place at a brand new venue this year’s festival will feature a selection of the biggest names in cutting-edge electronic music. This years event sees the festival scaled down in terms numbers (strictly limited to 5000 capacity) BUT will feature the same attention to detail which saw the event voted Best Dance Festival 2008 at the UK Festival Awards.

The Glade Festival roared into existence in 2004.

It was started by 4 chaps who, between them, had run and been involved in electronic music festivals the world over, especially in Southern Africa, and in the wonderful Glade Stage, the best place to catch the finest breaks and techno at Glastonbury Festival.

The idea was and still is to create an outdoor space where proper electronic music could be ...heard, danced to and totally loved in a colourful environment where you could let go, express yourself and be free of sponsors and music made by people who don’t get it…

It was a fantastic success and quickly gathered a momentum that took us all be surprise. Selling out in no time each year and taking the festival to a point where it had to move homes and then very sadly last year had to be cancelled.

The aim is to join a huge worldwide family in the present time continuum and in together allowing the Culture, the Love, the Sacred Earth and the Art to melt and mingle and eventually… Boom! We all take one big step together…

Every culture is expressed by its Art, emanating through the many expressions and shapes it assumes. A cultural event as a means of expression does not just focus on one of the aspects of the Art, but on the whole.Boom is an Art event, born from a culture which has long grown in the margins of mainstream culture reaching new expressions and visions. A whole world of people involved in the alternative, psychedelic and independent culture get together to show and share what they have found inside the Conscious Fractal, the Wholeness, the Oneness, the Truth.

Thoughts, music tracks, sculptures, paintings, clothes, films, photos, ideologies, experiences, communication, philosophies and lots more, all enhancing the possibilities of our life’s experiences. All adding to the Universe.

The Full Moon of August has always been our guide as far as the Boom calendar is concerned. It’s an ongoing tradition with a few years now (it is the 8th edition) and this has decreed the dates of the Boom festival since its birth in ´97.

Boom festival, due to its conscious shapeshifting and mutating properties, happens every two years in sync with the truth of impermanence, in sync with the Full Moon.

Burning Man Festival

What is Burning Man?

Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind. In this section you will find the peripheral definitions of what the event is as a whole, but to truly understand this event, one must participate. This site serves to try to paint a picture of the Burning Man experience to those who are new to the project, as well as to give those participants looking to keep the fire burning in their daily lives an environment in which to connect to their fellow community members. For a brief yet eloquent overview of the entire event from the time of arrival to the time of exodus, please read "What is Burning Man?", an essay written by participant and one-time web team member, Molly Steenson. Please see archived sections for each year to read more about the art themes, art installations and theme camps for each year.

Here you will find links that will take you on a trip through the past - through the history of Burning Man - from its early days on a small beach in San Francisco through its evolution into the bustling city of some 48,000+ people that the Burning Man event has become today. These people make the journey to the Black Rock Desert for one week out of the year to be part of an experimental community, which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in one's day-to-day life. The result of this experiment is Black Rock City, home to the Burning Man event.

There are no rules about how one must behave or express oneself at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and experience of the community at large); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community. The event takes place on an ancient lakebed, known as the playa. By the time the event is completed and the volunteers leave, sometimes nearly a month after the event has ended, there will be no trace of the city that was, for a short time, the most populous town in the entire county. Art is an unavoidable part of this experience, and in fact, is such a part of the experience that Larry Harvey, founder of the Burning Man project, gives a theme to each year, to encourage a common bond to help tie each individual's contribution together in a meaningful way. Participants are encouraged to find a way to help make the theme come alive, whether it is through a large-scale art installation, a theme camp, gifts brought to be given to other individuals, costumes, or any other medium that one comes up with.

The Burning Man project has grown from a small group of people gathering spontaneously to a community of over 48,000 people. It is impossible to truly understand the event as it is now without understanding how it has evolved. See the first years page and Burning Man 1986 - 1996 for the legendary story of Burning Man's beginnings and to understand how the event has come to become what it is today. The timeline gives a short overview of what each year looked like. Please also check out the detailed archives for years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Within each of these years are descriptions each year's art theme, theme camps, large art installations, as well as maps, journals of our city being built, the newsletters to the community for each year, issues of the Black Rock Gazette (a daily news publication produced and printed on the playa), and clean up reports for each year, including a list of those sites that failed to "leave no trace". These pages help understand the larger scope of the entire experience, from the planning that happens year-round to make each event possible, to the clean-up efforts which take place for sometimes months after the city has disappeared.

The impact of the Burning Man experience has been so profound that a culture has formed around it. This culture pushes the limits of Burning Man and has led to people banding together nation-wide, and putting on their own events, in attempt to rekindle that magic feeling that only being part of this community can provide. The Black Rock Arts Foundation promotes interactive art by supporting public art that exists outside the event, and has a special interest in supporting art at regional events. Additionally, Burning Man has over two thousand volunteers who work before, during and after the event (many who work year-round) to make the event a reality. To give of your time and talents, please see the Participate section of the website.

If this is your first visit to this site, a good starting point is the FAQ page, the glossary, and the timeline. From here you can stroll through the carefully archived sections for each year. Community, participation, self-expression, self-reliance; these tenets of Burning Man are lifeblood of the Burning Man experience. Whether you are new to this site or are returning for your umpteenth visit, you are encouraged to delve into these pages to expand your viewpoint and definition of these ideals, and to connect with yourself to find your niche in our community. The giving of yourself is the greatest gift you can give to the Burning Man community, and is imperative to the survival of this unique experiment.

Doof Festival

How it all begun?

Back in the time when Hendrix and the doors were the best acid tracks around, UV and zirkin, best friends since age 11, started DJ’ing and organizing rock parties in their home town. Years passed and after travelling the world, both discovered electronic music and set their mind on doing something about it. In 1996, After living in Amsterdam and gathering vinyls, tapes and some gear, they headed back to Israel with a party in their mind. Together with two good friends, Barkash and Rontal.

The Doof Project was born. An underground party organization, making low-cost psychedelic trance parties in the Israeli deserts and forests. The vibe and spirit of the good old days still lives in the Doof parties that still happen every now and then.

In the middle of 2000 after 5 years of partying, they realized that all the fantastic music they were making was only heard by a few hundreds of crazy trippers coming to the parties. They decided it’s time to share this.

music with the rest of the world, and founded Doof records that soon became known worldwide for its distinct psychedelic sound.

Few years later, as part of the trance scene progression, and the evolution in the musical taste of some of the home artists.

Doof Records presented its musical offspring – DOOFLEX which is active since 2005 and releasing lighter psychedelics.

Since 2004 they have been organizing the Doof Festival on the shores of the magical Sea of Galilee. This event brings together beautiful psychedelic people from all over Israel and the world for 4 days of music nature and smiles. Today, UV and Zirkin are managing the label and with Barkash and Rontal spend a few minutes every year dreaming and producing the Doof festival. In the spare time, UV completed his Ph.D in nanotechnology and does research in UCLA, and Zirkin is developing his musical career as well as doing the mastering for the label, and working on his Ph.D in biology (he’s the oldest dude in class…) Rontal is a professional cat-catcher for a street cat sterilization project and turning into a recycling guru. Barkash is our computer specialist, working as a system administrator in a large computer company and goes sky diving whenever he can take a break.
