Koxbox

Biography

Stalwarts of the Danish scene for sometime Frank'e, Peter Candy and Ian Ion started working together in the early '90s. Frank and Peter had made their names as DJs, influenced throughout the eighties by bands such as Kraftwerk, Front 242, Tangerine and Nu Beat when the pair met the producer Ian Ion, known for his work with The Overlords.

After releasing their first single on Where's The Party Records and a follow-up on Peter Candy's own Outloud Records, Koxbox came to the notice of DJ Sven Väth who signed them up to his seminal Harthouse label, who released six singles before the first Koxbox album Forever After. The album was widely recognised and increased the band's profile considerably. With the success, Koxbox decided to try out their material in front of a live audience and the unit had their debut together with house act Fluke at The Blitz in Denmark.

After this experience the London house-boys had to spend quite some time recovering from post-psychedelic stress symptoms. In 1997 Koxbox decided to sign with the London electronica label, Blueroom Released and in November 1997 the album Dragon Tales was released. Dave Fowler pretty much summed up the reaction to the album in Muzik magazine; "Probably the most in-yer-face psychedelic outfit ever, with the possible exception of Brian Jones and his nomadic Moroccan tribesman circa 1967, Danish floor fillers Koxbox are not know for pulling any punches."

The same year saw Koxbox remixes of Juno Reactor and Slinky Wizard and at the same time Frank'e and Ian formed the band Psychopod which released a couple of successful singles on T.I.P. Records. The following year of '98 was a year of change for Koxbox, Peter Candy left the band and Frank and Ian spent most of the year working on film music and a new album.

In the summer of '99 after some exciting gigs all over the world and after Frank'e having his first child, Koxbox put the finishing touches on a new album The Great Unknown. The Great Unknown was a radical departure from the known Koxbox style, slower and more funky, but retaining the crystalline production and exquisite application of state of the art technology for which the band is known. With the album in hand the duo went to the new successful German trance label, Novatekk, who signed them immediately.

The Great Unknown went on to become one of the best selling psy-trance albums of the new millennium, backed with a number of gigs all over the world that established Koxbox as one of the leading bands on the scene. And with the following 12”/CDM “A Major Problem in Australia”, they broke into new markets with a variety of remixes in a progressive style.

After the success of The Great Unknown, Frank’e and Ian set out to work on the Psychopod project and give it a new spin. After the demise of T.I.P. Records, they decided to take the project in a new, more club oriented direction, while still retaining the original “sound breaker” concept. So the twosome decided to change the name to Saiko-pod. “Saiko” meaning “great” or “the highest” in Japanese. In 2000 and 2001 a number of tracks were released on different compilations to mark the beginning of a new style from the Koxbox lab.

In the beginning of 2002 the first Saiko-pod album, “Phutures and Options” was finished and licensed to Spiral Trax (Sweden), Solstice Music (Japan) and Sound Sorcery (Mexico), thus securing that audiences all over the world are able to find the tracks they’ve enjoyed on the dance floor in their local record shop. While finishing Phutures and Options, Frank’e and Ian have been building new studio facilities in their hometown of Copenhagen and the cover of the album features a picture of the studio command centre. From this place comes 74 minutes of intelligent trance and downbeat that builds on the Koxbox tradition for punch and innovation.

Following the release of Saiko-pod is a number of live gigs and remixes to stun and enjoy. And the rest is future history

Shpongle

Biography

After three groundbreaking albums over the course of a decade, the internationally acclaimed electronica project Shpongle has returned from what fans feared was the end of the project when Nothing LastsĂ¢€¦but Nothing is Lost, their third album, was released. Not prepared to leave us hanging, electronic music pioneers Simon Posford and Raja Ram have continued to push the envelope and break boundaries to create yet another sonic masterpiece: the much-awaited fourth Shpongle album, Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland.

There are languages here that Shpongle fans will know and love as much as their previous work, and yet there are some massive leaps forward in terms of production techniques, sonic trickery, structure, and direction compared to all of the previous outings to date. With influences drawn from anywhere from Steve Reich and Mike Oldfield to the Batman movies and beyond, this really is another over the top record in terms of production skills, tonal textures, and original ideas from Shpongle. It is rich in detail and emotion, in worldly and otherworldly samples and inspiration, and in harmonic and melodic construction.

Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland opens with the massive Electroplasm, a rapidfire ascent into eastern scales and rich harmonic textures, underscored with a strongly pronounced rhythmic foundation. They dial in a different mode with Shpongolese Spoken Here, which transitions from glitchy breaks to four-on-the-floor mayhem before settling into a more laid-back but bouncy number. Nothing is Something Worth Doing is a grounded yet floaty work featuring a sophisticated tonal and harmonic palette, six-and-a-half minutes of timelessness before fading into the long-awaited Ineffable Mysteries. With original atmospheric and vocal samples from India, this tracks simple beginnings lead to a strong rhythmic drive and incredible sonic manipulations blending Raja Rams flute, Indian vocals, and synthesized creations.

That journey is followed by another - I Am You moves through shifting sands of time and sound, from its mysterious beginning through its central love song inspired by a special muse, evolving into a rhythmic and sonic tapestry of phenomenal complexity. Invisible Man In A Fluorescent Suit opens with a mournful cello solo that expands in true Shpongolian fashion into a celebratory melodic blend of synthesized and organic instrumentation before fading into the next track. No Turn Un-Stoned is cut from a different cloth, with a broodier opening that morphs into shimmering effects and soulful vocals floating over crisply defined rhythmic elements.

The final track is a multi-faceted jewel in the crown of this glowing album: Backwards Through The Cosmic Mirror features a grounded four-on-the-floor rhythm that supports forward-moving harmonic and sonic explorations with as many twists and turns as the previous tracks, eventually fading into the floating sea of soundlessness from which its brilliance arose.

Shpongle continues to evolve and inspire, as their sold-out gigs worldwide have demonstrated. The anticipation for this album is such that their launch party at the Roundhouse in London this October sold out and a second night had to be added. The demand for this album is expected to be in proportion to the uniqueness of its content. The CD booklet was designed by Storm Thorgerson, who created the classic record sleeve for Pink FloydĂ¢€™s Dark Side of the Moon and other timeless releases, making the entire package a consistent creative tour de force. Unique in their sound, structure, and style, Shpongle is at the forefront of the music of our generation.

1200 Micrograms (1200 Mics)

Biography

1200 Micrograms (sometimes credited as 1200 Mics) are a psychedelic trance act from Ibiza. The members are Riktam and Bansi who are the duo also comprising G.M.S., and Raja Ram and Chicago. The band split up in late 2006 following ongoing disputes; Riktam was fed up writing all the music and splitting the money three ways, while Raja Ram and Chicago became irritated at Riktam and Bansi’s unreliability in turning up for performances.

The name 1200 Micrograms comes from a reference to the amount of LSD that it would take to dose the four members of the group. A Terence McKenna quotation sampled in the track ‘LSD’: “A substance so powerful that 300 micrograms is the dose. That means 1 gram will dose 7000 people”. Their music is known for the heavy use of guitars and a focus on themes related to drugs.

The idea for starting the project allegedly came to Raja Ram while he was thinking about making an album about his favorite drugs. Thus, their first, self-titled album featured 9 tracks about Ayahuasca, Hashish, Mescaline, LSD, Marijuana, Ecstasy, Magic Mushrooms, Salvia Divinorum and DMT. Not surprisingly, the tracks featured many quotes from Terence McKenna and samples from movies like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The album has been a big success, and 1200 Mics even released a Marijuana music video in 2003.

Eskimo

Biography

The name “Eskimo” can refer to a (UK) psy-trance producer, a (US) horrorlounge band, a (Russian) alternative band, a (Brazilian) rock band or an (Estonian) instrumental hip-hop artist.

UK Eskimo:

At the grand old age of 22, Eskimo aka Junya is one of the most promising of the new generation of trance producers out there. Having released his debut artist album "Can You Pick Me Up" aged 17, Eskimo was almost immediately catapulted amongst the trance elite, add to this his scorching DJ Sets as DJ Junya, that he had been playing worldwide since he was 13, Eskimo is without a doubt one of the most exciting British artists today.

His unique production skills and ability to put together a class-A belter saw Eskimo’s tunes begin to show up in the sets of psy trance DJs across the globe..

By the time he performed his first live set 6 months after the album dropped his repertoire had trebled and so had his ability. Landmark remixes, many still unreleased due to copyright wrangles, from this time included some of the scenes biggest players such as Infected Mushroom and Skazi, but it was his unofficial remix of The Prodigy "Voodoo People" that sealed his reputation on the global dance floor. When this struck everyone knew who Eskimo was. By the summer of 2004 Eskimo dropped his second artist album "Take A Look Out There" a mind-altering collection of tunes let loose on an unsuspecting world including the near legendary "Party Pooper" a track sampling the police shutting down a free party...

In November 2005 the release of Balloonatic Part One, a genre busting masterpiece redefined the standard of studio trickery yet retained a firm grip on the dance floor. With the release of Balloonatic Part Two in September 2006, Eskimo looks set to seal his already unassailable position as the most original and one of the most popular artists working in dance music today. GMS

Biography

Groundbreaking psychedelic trance group Growling Mad Scientists — Riktam (Shajahan Matkin) and Bansi (Josef Quinteros, who is originally from Barcelona)—regularly tour the world and have sold over 200,000 albums on over 150 releases. Their music pushes and blurs sonic boundaries and has inspired both producers and punters alike, making G.M.S. one of the most in-demand live electronic acts in the world.

G.M.S. began when Riktam and Bansi met in high school at age 14 in Amsterdam. Both were passionate about electronic music, so the duo chose to leave school and seek their education in the club scene. “We really didn’t find what we really liked to do in school,” says Riktam. “We wanted to focus on music, so we started DJing. It just felt like the right thing to do for us.”

Even though they were too young to legally enter a nightclub, Riktam and Bansi began spinning at clubs in Amsterdam. On most occasions, they had to be whisked into the building’s side door to avoid scrutiny by the authorities. While in the DJ booth, they’d often receive double takes from clubbers who caught a glimpse of the two teenagers rocking the dance floor.

This was the early ’90s and Amsterdam’s club/rave scene was in its infancy, and genres like Gabber dominated the fledgling culture. Two years later, Riktam and Bansi traveled to Goa and experienced a musical epiphany. “This is where we got famous,” smiles Riktam.

Alien Project

Biography

Alien Project is the psychedelic trance artist Ari Linker from Tel Aviv, Israel. He has been DJing and producing music since 1994, and his sound has evolved into a recognizably upbeat psytrance sound. He is heavily influenced by Shpongle and Astral Projection.

Ari Linker has been tirelessly creating, composing and producing music for quite a few years and it doesn’t look like, even now, as he matures, better than a fine wine, that he has any intention of retiring in the near future.

Ari’s sound has engraved it’s essence upon all ears that hear and he has assuredly earned himself an honorary place at the table of Trance Masters. He is currently touring the world performing live at parties and events across the globe and is quite probably the most sought after trance act on the scene today.

So what led Ari to the place he is now at?
Well, it all began in that mystical, far-out land in India Goa, the birthplace of so much, for so many. Way back in 1994, Ari took his first trip out there, and since then he has made a happy pilgrimage back to the land of Shpongle every year.

Needless to say, he had more than a few mind-blowing, life-enhancing experiences which inspired him to get involved (totally involved) in the musical revolution that was rapidly developing and the result of which was the birth of an incredible, new and pioneering form of music: Psychedelic Trance Techno was born.

Infected Mushroom

Biography

“It was originally going to be a concept album about food we are addicted to,” says Amit “Duvdev” Duvedevani of electronic-rock phenoms INFECTED MUSHROOM about the group’s latest album, Legend of the Black Shawarma. “We had a batch of songs celebrating our favorite places to eat around the world. Then we got into more intense subject matter, but as the title suggests, there’s still a lot of material about getting your grub on.”

For their ravenous international fan base, the latest offering--due out September 8 on Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label from Duvdev and his musical partner Erez Eisen--is some very potent Mushroom indeed and boasts some high-profile guests. The lead single “Smashing the Opponent” features a scorching vocal from Korn’s Jonathan Davis, while Jane’s Addiction/Porno for Pyros frontman and alternative-rock patron saint Perry Farrell lends his inimitable pipes to the follow-up single , “Killing Time.”

“Recording with Jonathan and Perry was a highlight, of course,” Duvdev notes. “They were both incredibly cool. The fact that they liked the tracks was awesome because we’re huge fans of what they do.”

Shawarma finds the Israeli-bred, L.A.-based electronic duo taking their Psy-Trance fusion of bruising, metallic rock and unstoppable dance-floor beats to a new level. “It’s a really diverse record,” Duvdev relates of the band’s follow-up to 2007’s Vicious Delicious, “it’s even more aggressive–both on the metal side and on the breakbeat side.”

Oakenfold worked closely with the band in an A&R/producer capacity. “Paul’s known as a house DJ, so we weren’t sure how he’d feel about our heaviest material,” Duvdev reveals, “but he loved it. He brought a lot of great energy and advice to the table.” Duvdev and Erez also road-tested several of the tracks in dance clubs, then adjusted them based on audience response.

The band took its time crafting the album , working on material whenever their frenetic, globe-trotting tour schedule permitted. During the process they constructed a new studio from scratch in the aptly named So Cal locale of Studio City. “We used to go into any room and make it a studio,” Duvdev recalls. “But the new Infected Mushroom Laboratory is as state-of-the-art as you can get for recording electronic music. We built a tracking room for live drums.”

Whether singing about “Smashing” and “Killing” or paying tribute to beloved eateries like “Poquito Mas,” “Frank’s” (“The best taco place in Mexico in our opinion”) or Israeli hummus factory “Sae’ed,” Infected Mushroom prove they’ve stayed hungry despite their massive international success. “That’s us,” Duvdev says with a laugh. “Kicking ass and then having a snack.”

What of the album’s mysterious, culinary title? “We were on tour in Australia two years ago,” he explains. “A friend came to me & said, ‘I have this dream to dive with sharks.’ They do that in Australia–you’re lowered into shark-infested waters in a cage.” At that point, Duvdev warned his burly friend that in a wetsuit he would resemble, to toothy denizens of the deep, a certain meat wrap of Middle Eastern origin. “I told him if he did this, there were five gigantic sharks waiting for a shawarma like him to come down in a cage and be devoured. We thought that was pretty funny and the Legend of the Black Shawarma was born.” As the title track’s cautionary lyrics have it: “Life’s been treating you nice/You better be wise/And enjoy your moment.”

Thanks to their boundary-pushing songs and incendiary performances, the adventurous duo has become one of the biggest electronic bands on the planet. Twice ranked among the world’s 10 best DJs by the bible of the scene, the U.K.’s DJ magazine, they routinely whip crowds of all cultures into the same whirling froth. Their explosive show, featuring guitars, live drums, Duvdev’s intensely passionate vocals, Erez’s nimble keyboards and an ambitious multimedia backdrop, ranks among the genre’s most unpredictably joyous events.

Their schedule has proved as relentless as their juggernaut jams. From the Ultra Music Festival in Miami (which drew over 100,000 attendees this past March), Cali’s Coachella, the Virgin Festival in Baltimore, Mexico’s OMIX, Brazil’s Ipanema Beach and Melbourne’s Metro Club, Infected Mushroom has averaged about 120 live performances per year.
